Alex A. Avila, MA, LPC, CSAT, ACS, NCC, CACI, CBCP
Concerned for each individual’s future success and helping them reach their counseling, relationship, and life goals, I believe that providing therapy and relationship education is more than a job. My principal goal is to make each client and class participant feel comfortable and gain valuable information to better enjoy their relationships.
Honesty. Respect. Integrity. Confidentiality. Professionalism. These guiding principles inform my work with clients as well as my interactions with colleagues, family, and friends. Through open, honest, and respectful communication, I seek to model healthy relationship behaviors and communication skills for my clients. Maintaining a healthy emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual balance also allows me to achieve excellence on personal and professional levels.
Moreover, I believe spirituality is a strong component for reaching optimum levels of life satisfaction. For me, Christian values and aspects inform my daily living. As a professional counselor, however, I do not impose my personal spiritual beliefs and values on clients. For your benefit, my graduate-level counseling training has equipped me to incorporate your spiritual preference (or religious or non-religious beliefs) with other life components to help you reach your specific goals. While meeting with me, your background and belief system will always be respected and valued.
One size does not fit all! To personalize each client’s experience, I draw from a variety of clinical approaches and theoretical orientations including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Family Systems therapy. I understand that we always need a safe place to process current and past struggles, and sometimes we need more skills and practical guidance to move through a stuck place.
My Training and Experience
I hold numerous hours of professional experience counseling and teaching individuals and couples on a variety of life issues. I earned a master’s degree (with honors) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and hold a bachelors degree (graduating Summa Cum Laude) with a dual major in Psychology and Business Administration.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Addiction Counselor (CACI) in the State of Colorado, a National Certified Counselor (NCC), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), and Certified Body-Centered Psychotherapist (CBCP). I have obtained intensive academic and experiential training as an Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist (EFT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy clinician.
I am certified to administer to facilitate the research-supported PREPARE-ENRICH inventory to dating, engaged and married couples. As a PREPARE-ENRICH Seminar Director, I also enjoy teaching counselors and other professionals to use this very valuable assessment. I have earned a certificate in Critical Incident Stress Management and have obtained safety planning instruction in the global Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) model.
I help clients (teen, individual men and women, couples and families) in the following areas:
- Anxiety, Panic, Phobias
- Affair Recovery
- Anger Management
- Couple Counseling (Dating, Engaged, Married)
- Identity Development
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Relationship Counseling (for individuals)
- Sexual Addiction
- Suicide Intervention & Safety Planning
- Trauma Recovery (using EMDR therapy)
I am a member in good standing with the American Counseling Association, American Association of Christian Counselors, International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, EMDR International Association, National Board for Certified Counselors, Colorado Counseling Association, and Colorado Association of Psychotherapists.
I counsel, teach, supervise, and consult with others. I proactively seek learning opportunities and frequently attend professional trainings to remain current in the counseling field in my specialty areas as well as in popular mental health topics so I may pass on the latest research-supported skills and insights to clients, class participants, and other counselors I supervise. I enjoy teaching on relationship issues and various life struggles while bringing awareness to help people live more satisfying, fulfilling, and peaceful lives.
I am also an active proponent in promoting preventive measures to help people experience optimal health and safety in the community. Maintaining key partnerships with local and regional organizations help me achieve this important aspect of my personal mission.
